Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin ICS declares a system critical incident

The Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Integrated Care System (ICS) declared a system critical incident on Tuesday 29 March 2022. This is in relation to increasing numbers of patients with covid in our hospitals and extremely high levels of staff sickness across our health and care system.

Both of these issues are having a knock-on effect on other NHS services including GP practices across the county. We are asking all patients to be aware of the exceptional demand we are currently facing, including our own staff sickness levels.

Our staff are working very hard to accommodate all patient needs. Minor ailments can be addressed via your local pharmacy, and our reception team can pre-book these appointments for you.

Professionals across the county are doing everything they can to rapidly improve the position and apologise for any negative impact this may have on our patients.

Thursday 3rd March 2022

Pontesbury & Worthen Medical Practice will be closed for training from 1.00 PM on Thursday 3rd March 2022.

We will open as normal again at 08:30 on Friday 4th March

If you need medical treatment that cannot wait until the surgery is open again please dial 111 or dial 999 in an emergency.

Appointments – Online Booking

Advance appointments can now be booked online here: https://app.patientaccess.com/login. Or on the NHS APP. These are standard routine Doctor appointments.

In order to use patient access a registration form will need to be filled in at the practice, for which you will need to bring some form of identification such as a driving license or passport. You will then be issued with a PIN number to be able to book online.

When booking the appointment please ensure you put a reason for the appointment (this is only visible to the GP/Practice member) and if you wish to have a telephone consultation and not attend the surgery for a face to face appointment please note the telephone number you wish to be contacted on.

COVID-19 Booster Vaccines and Influenza

In order to protect our population and to ensure no disruption in vaccine supply, we are co-delivering influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations in a joint effort with our neighbouring colleagues across Shrewsbury and the surrounding areas. The clinics will be run centrally at Severn Fields Health Village, with clinical support from each practice involved. Clinics will be running on weekends until the end of December. As always, we appreciate your support. You will be invited to book an appointment either by text, letter or phone call when you are eligible to receive your COVID-19 Booster vaccination. The dedicated phone number at Severn Fields for any queries about booking and clinics is 01743 649800.

You will still be invited to have this at Severn Fields even if you have already had your Seasonal Influenza vaccination elsewhere.

Combined flu and COVID booster appointments

Patients over 50 and in the at risk groups for a combined flu and covid booster appointment will be contacted shortly – in line with recommendations for patients to have the two vaccines together where possible. If you can’t have both vaccines together there needs to be a gap of 7 days between them.

Patients will be invited to these clinics in order of priority according to the JCVI cohorts – the clinics will be running through to December.

Patients that are due their booster will also receive a text from the National team which will invite you to book via 119 and will offer appointments in Telford, Market Drayton and Woodside. You can choose to book one of these appointments, or wait for us to contact you for a local appointment at Severn Fields Vaccination Centre.

In the meantime, please make sure reception have your up to date mobile telephone number, as this is the easiest way for us to invite you.

Covid booster and Flu Vaccinations

We are just finding out information about the covid booster campaign at the same time as the public are, and do not yet have all the details. We are anticipating deliveries of covid booster vaccines to Shrewsbury in early October and will soon start inviting patients over 50 and in the at risk groups for a combined flu and covid booster appointment – this is in line with recommendations for patients to have the two vaccines together where possible. Appointments will be at the vaccination centre at Severn Fields. Patients will be invited to these clinics in order of priority according to the JCVI cohorts as with the initial doses, and due to the volume of patients we are vaccinating the clinics will be running right through to December. In the meantime, please make sure we have your up to date mobile telephone number, as this is the easiest way for us to invite you.

16-17 Year old Covid vaccines

Age 16 or 17?  You can now have your Covid vaccination.  You can do this by attending a walk in clinic, details below:

https://stwics.org.uk/our-priorities/covid-19-vaccination-programme/walk-in-clinic-times

Please do not try and book through the practice, we cannot book Covid vaccination appointments for you.  The national online booking service will only allow you to book if you are within 3 months of your 18th birthday, so please attend a walk in clinic if you are 16 or 17.

Or if you are going to the Telford Balloon Fiesta this weekend, Bob the Bus will be there too, so you can #GrabAJab there if you prefer!

New prescription system at Pontesbury & Worthen Medical Practice

We will be introducing a new prescription ordering system for all of our patients at Pontesbury & Worthen Medical Practice.

If you collect your medication from either Pontesbury Surgery or Worthen Surgery you will be given a letter detailing the new system.

The new system will come into affect after you have next collected your medication.

You will need to order your next month’s worth of medication 7 days before they are due to run out. There are different ways of doing this. The first way of ordering your medication is through the NHS App. This is the same App that can be used to view your medical record and to get a COVID vaccination pass. More information on the NHS App can be found here

The other option is for you to complete the slip that you receive with your medication each month by ticking the medication that you require and dropping this into our dedicated post boxes at both Pontesbury surgery and Worthen surgery. We will also accept completed repeat slips through normal post.

If you are unsure about setting up the NHS App we have staff that would be more than happy to help. Please contact the practice and leave your details with reception and we can get in touch with you to help with other options, including giving friends and family access to the App so they can order on your behalf.

In order to save you making unnecessary trips to the surgery, we can also let you know when your medication is ready to collect via text message, if you are not able to receive text message please let us know and we can discuss other ways of letting you know.

Our goal for this new system is to reduce errors and ensure that your medication is ready for you when you need it whilst also reducing wastage of unwanted medications being prepared. Ultimately, we are putting this system in place so that we can give all of our patients the best possible experience when dealing with us.

If you have any queries please get in touch with us via telephone, email or post.
