We are fortunate to have a Dispensary at the practice and dispense medication to most of our patients.  Medicines prescribed during a consultation can usually be collected straight away. The dispensary opening hours are:

  • 8.45am to 1pm and 2pm to 6.30pm Monday – Friday at Pontesbury
  • 8.30am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm, Monday to Thursday, 8.30 to 1pm Friday at Worthen

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
  • using the GP online system – see Patient Triage
  • complete the slip that you receive with your medication each month by ticking the medication that you require and dropping this into our dedicated post boxes at both Pontesbury and Worthen. We will also accept completed repeat slips through normal post.

The online accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

Please allow 5 working days for repeat prescriptions. If you receive communication by text from the surgery please wait to receive a text message advising you that your prescription is ready for collection before attending the surgery. If you have a mobile number and do not receive text messages please contact the surgery to update your contact details.

Routine Prescriptions

If you think you may need a prescription medicine, please make an appointment with the doctor. Our practice nurse can also issue prescriptions for common ailments. If you have previously been given a prescription for a straightforward condition, such as hay fever, we may be able to issue a prescription after a telephone consultation. Please ask the receptionist.

Your local pharmacist should be able to give you advice for non-prescription medication. We are allowed to dispense medication to patients who live in rural areas, or more than a mile from the nearest chemist. If you don’t qualify for this service you must take your prescriptions to one of the community pharmacies. Ask us about registering for our dispensing service if you think you qualify

Emergency Prescriptions

You should ask to speak to the dispensary first, they are aware of the items that they can issue as an emergency prescription. If they cannot help you they may suggest that you arrange to have a telephone conversation with a doctor.

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, the dispensary can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.
